CBC management treats Windsor redundancies as firings

Three employees in Windsor’s TV ad sales department have been told their jobs are redundant, including two members of the Canadian Media Guild. Although the two Guild members are still employees – and continue to have rights under the collective agreement, they were told to hand in their employee ID cards and leave the building.

The Guild believes this move shows an incredible lack of respect for the long-serving employees affected and asked that their ID cards be restored.

Management refused and told the Guild that requiring the employees to stay home during the notice period was designed to “protect” the sales department, implying that these employees, each with more than 20 years of service to the CBC, might try to sabotage CBC operations.

The affected employees will now have to ask permission from management to attend on-site meetings with their union representatives, who are working to make sure their rights under the collective agreement are respected.

CBC management told the Guild that the work of the affected employees will now be performed by the sales department in Toronto, leaving only one sales representative working in Windsor. The Guild is seeking clarification on the reasons for the move.
