Fall update – CBC/Radio-Canada Branch

Dear fellow CMG members,

I’d like to update you on some important items related to our collective bargaining round earlier this year.

New Job Descriptions

CBC/Radio-Canada has provided the Canadian Media Guild (CMG) with the seven job descriptions that were discussed during bargaining (Reporter – Editor, Associate Producer, Video Producer, Broadcast Technician, Senior Communications Officer, Senior Designer, Desktop Support Specialist).

The joint union-management Job Strategy committee is in the midst of reviewing the descriptions based on the information members provided last year on their current job functions. Starting in late September, the National Job Evaluation committee will analyze the job descriptions according to the joint JE plan and slot them into the appropriate salary band. Watch for more updates on the developments.

New Collective Agreement

We know that members are waiting to see the text of the new collective agreement compiled. We have been working over the summer to make sure this gets done. We are reviewing the first draft this week and aim to have the final copy up on the CMG website and posted shortly in English and French.

Temporary Positions

Fourteen members have been converted to permanent status from temporary status as a result of the new agreement, including an employee who has agreed to take on the new “multiple backfill” assignment at CBC News in Toronto. That assignment, which we have sometimes called a “floater” assignment, will be reviewed within 12 months to see if it is viable to rely less on temporary employment status to backfill absent employees.

In addition, the Corporation is in the midst of posting the 24 new permanent positions it committed to creating during negotiations. All of these positions are expected to be filled by November as agreed.

In solidarity,

Jonathan Spence
President, CBC/Radio-Canada Branch
