CMG Elections 2016 – Candidate profile: Natalie Clancy

Candidate for Vice-President, CBC/Radio-Canada Branch

natalie_clancyI humbly offer to serve as your VP to represent CBC members during what will be a tumultuous time in Canadian Journalism. I hear every day from co-workers who say they don’t think the guild is working for them. I think the only way to fix that impression is to get involved.

I have been a union activist since I began my career 25 years ago at CBC, Moncton, then Halifax, Calgary, St. John’s and finally Vancouver. I serve as BC director on the CBC Branch Executive. I also serve on our national joint health and safety policy committee.

I am a multi platform, award winning, investigative reporter now, but I started in radio current affairs, then moved to radio news, then TV news, and became a National TV Reporter, then local late night anchor. I am plugged in to the many challenges, and pressures on our editorial and technical staff in our newsrooms and respectfully submit that more newsroom representation is needed on the CMG – CBC/SRC branch executive to help our members.

I also will advocate for CMG to restructure so we can put a staff representative in Halifax to serve our members in Atlantic Canada. We saw a huge improvement after CMG finally filled the position with a staff rep in Vancouver. Our members in Atlantic Canada, (where I grew up and started my career,) deserve better.

The VP position is also taking on the new members portfolio at CBC-CMG. I love to mentor new members and worry about our younger co-workers, who too often work many years without getting permanent positions, in spite of the collective agreement. I have watched in frustration as so many that I have mentored…bright, diverse journalists and technicians leave CBC due to the lack of steady or meaningful work.

I speak French, and will passionately defend all our CBC and SRC members, whose jobs are very much under threat in a changing media landscape. I continue to question the 2020 plan, it’s lack of revenue streams, and abandonment of television news gathering and in house documentaries. I have spoken publicly in support of an independently appointed CBC board at emphasized the need for a new board at my appearance before the recent “Media Math” consultation lead by Ed Greenspon for Minister Joly. I volunteered many hours to support our “Champion CBC” Lawn sign campaign.

I also serve on the board of an autism charity in BC and my husband and I have 12 year old twin boys. I welcome your feedback with questions or concerns via NatalieClancyCMG@gmail.com or my Facebook page:

Natalie Clancy
