CMG Elections 2019 – Candidate profile: Matthew Martin
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I am running for Director North and here’s why.
Our Union is strong – but not as strong as it used to be.
Our Union is relevant – both to ourselves and for all Canadians who value the CBC.
Our Union supports its members – but not everyone.
Our Union is divided – but it doesn’t have to be that way.
I feel our current leadership has sold out the North. We have lost our necessary Northern Medical Travel Benefits and we are often not given a second thought by our union leadership in central Canada.
Furthermore, CMG leadership is gun-shy since the 2005 lockout. We are much stronger now but we could be even stronger and we don’t need to shy away from protecting our labour rights.
I want our union to be united, to be strong, and to be vocal in defending our rights. I can represent the North’s interests at the National level.
I am the best person for this role because of my previous union experience with CUPE as an executive treasurer, because as a scheduler for the North I see the issues our staff face daily, and because I can articulate our needs for everyone across the North.
My priorities include solving the ‘casual problem’ in the North (ie precarious work), improving educational opportunities for all members, improving communications, and engaging the membership with unifying policies and activities that represent all of us. Together, we are strong.
As an openly gay man, I value diversity and differences amongst my friends and colleagues. I strive to recognize and be respectful of the cultural differences across the North.
Please vote for me as Director – North.
Feel free to get in touch to discuss these issues or anything else on your mind.
